In collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) and the Egyptian Control Authority, UNGC Network Egypt (UNGCNE) hosted a three-day "Anti-Corruption in the Private Sector" training. Siemens Energy also participated in this critical initiative, which brought together a wide range of industry leaders and representatives from companies such as Attijariwafa Egypt, CIB, Redcon Construction, ADSERO, and EGYTRANS, among others.
The training aimed to empower businesses to take a proactive stance against corruption by fostering a culture of transparency and integrity.Key discussions included the implementation of effective compliance programs, strategies for analyzing and managing corruption risks, and the role of businesses in driving collective action.

Participants explored the Anti-Corruption Collective Action Playbook, developed by the United Nations Global Compact, to generate practical solutions and strategies for anti-corruption initiatives. The session also highlighted the importance of robust internal controls in ensuring that organizations maintain ethical practices and operate with transparency.

The event culminated with a session from the Administrative Control Authority, which emphasized the ongoing nature of the fight against corruption. The training provided actionable insights and reinforced the role of the private sector in promoting a corruption-free environment.

Through this event, UNGC Network Egypt strengthened its objective to support businesses in creating transparent, accountable, and ethical operations while advancing the fight against corruption across Egypt's private sector, and the 10th principle of the UNGC principles.

In November 2023, UNGC Network Egypt successfully hosted the Annual African Regional Meetings in Cairo at the Hilton Heliopolis Hotel. This four-day event, from November 6th to 9th, united UNGC teams from across Africa to collaborate on advancing sustainable goals for a more inclusive and prosperous continent, and share progress, and future plans for their respective UNGC networks within the continent.
The meetings focused on several critical issues. The private sector’s role in responding to regional challenges like climate change, humanitarian crises, and economic instability was at the forefront. Discussions explored how businesses can contribute to Africa’s sustainable development, particularly in areas like climate action, gender equality, and living wages.

A key highlight was the Africa Strategy Refresh, which emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder consultations to strengthen Africa’s regional voice. The strategy’s top priorities include climate action, water resilience, and investment in sustainable finance, all of which are crucial to driving Africa’s future growth.

The event also highlighted the need to support Africa’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly the top 400, by enhancing the value of the UNGC’s initiatives and increasing resources for fundraising. This strategic approach is aimed at helping SMEs overcome challenges and thrive in the global market.

Throughout the event, participants also engaged in networking sessions to explore opportunities for regional expansion and collaboration. Discussions on aligning local strategies with regional goals resulted in the creation of a unified work plan that leverages the power of effective communication to showcase the UNGC’s impact and broaden its reach.

The meetings concluded with a renewed emphasis on collective action and synergy among the African networks, strengthening UNGC Network Egypt’s role in fostering collaboration to drive sustainable development across the continent.

In honor of International Women's Day, Mrs. Walaa El-Husseiny, Country Director of the UN Global Compact Network Egypt, joined forces with the Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX) and took part in the annual “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” ceremony. This global initiative symbolizes the commitment of stock exchanges and businesses worldwide to advancing gender equality in the workplace and beyond.
During her address, Mrs. El-Husseiny emphasized the critical role of the private sector in achieving gender equality, a cornerstone of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She highlighted the Gender Equality Accelerator, a pioneering initiative designed to equip companies with practical tools and strategies to embed gender-sensitive practices into their operations. This program empowers businesses to build more inclusive workplaces, support women’s advancement, and contribute to a more equitable society.

Mrs. El-Husseiny called on all businesses to uphold the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, particularly those related to human rights, equality, and non-discrimination. She noted that fostering gender equality is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage, unlocking innovation, boosting performance, and enhancing organizational resilience.

The partnership with EGX reflects a shared vision to create a more equitable and sustainable future. Through collaborative efforts, this initiative expands the reach of gender equality programs, inspires other organizations to follow suit, and sets a precedent for positive change across the region.

The event also featured insightful discussions on best practices for gender equality in business, success stories from participants of the Gender Equality Accelerator, and an inspiring call to action for businesses to lead the way in advancing inclusivity.

In July 2024, UN Global Compact Network Egypt partnered with Tatweer Misr, a leading real estate development company, to launch the 6th round of its Innovation Competition. The competition was designed to encourage young, innovative entrepreneurs and startups, many of whom were university students, to showcase their creative solutions for addressing sustainability challenges. The goal was to integrate advanced technology and promote environmental and social responsibility. From green building designs to cutting-edge smart city technologies, the competition highlighted the potential of the real estate sector to contribute to a more sustainable and innovative tomorrow.

The four winning groups of this year’s competition were given the exciting opportunity to participate in a 9-day exchange trip to Germany and the Netherlands, where they presented their projects to leading companies, institutions, and universities in Europe. This collaboration, organized in partnership with Denk Vision, a German non-profit organization, allowed the winners to engage with experts in sustainability, learn about best practices in urban planning, and gain valuable insights into how their innovative solutions could be applied in real-world scenarios.

The exchange trip not only provided hands-on learning experiences but also fostered important international networks, enabling the winners to connect with like-minded innovators and potential collaborators from around the world. Through visits to top universities and companies, they had the opportunity to share their ideas, receive feedback, and explore new opportunities for scaling their solutions globally.

This collaboration spotlighted the critical role of innovation in advancing the SDGs and creating more sustainable cities, and infrastructure. It demonstrated the power of cross-border partnerships in solving pressing challenges related to urbanization, climate change, and social inclusion. By connecting local young entrepreneurs with international experts and providing them with a platform to showcase their work, the program empowered the winners to continue driving positive change in the real estate and sustainability sectors.

The experience has reinforced the importance of fostering global dialogue and collaboration as key elements of sustainable development, ultimately strengthening networks and inspiring future generations of innovators to continue contributing to a sustainable and inclusive future.

It serves as a platform for fostering international dialogue, collaboration, and the creation of actionable solutions that contribute to a sustainable and equitable future. UNGA Week 2024 focused on a wide range of critical issues, including climate change, social justice, economic inclusion, and the acceleration of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNGC Network Egypt’s Engagement at UNGA Week 2024

UNGC Network Egypt was proud to play an active role in UNGA Week 2024, contributing meaningful insights and perspectives on key issues driving global sustainability efforts. Mr. Ayman Ismail, Chairman of the Board of Directors of UNGC Network Egypt, addressed participants during the “Future-Proofing Business by Improving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Workplace” session. He communicated the importance of embracing DEI not only as a social responsibility but as a powerful driver for business success. Referencing McKinsey’s research, Mr. Ismail emphasized that gender diversity can increase profitability by up to 21%, reinforcing that inclusive practices are integral to building sustainable and successful organizations. His call for leadership accountability and fostering inclusive work environments resonated strongly with the diverse audience.

Driving Sustainable Impacts in Africa Session

Mrs. Walaa El Husseiny, Country Director of UNGC Egypt, moderated the “Driving Sustainable Impacts in Africa” session. This conversation featured Ms. Abir Leheta, CEO of Egytrans and Board Member of UNGC Egypt, who shared insights about Egytrans’ sustainability journey. The session focused on Egytrans' ambitious carbon reduction goals for 2030 and highlighted how the company’s holistic strategy integrates environmental, social, and technological dimensions. Mrs. El Husseiny highlighted the need for capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and strong partnerships to drive sustainable change in Africa.

SDG Pioneer Awards

An important milestone during UNGA Week was the SDG Pioneers Award ceremony, where Mennatullah AbdelGawad, Business Sustainability Manager at Hassan Allam Holding, a UNGC participant was honored as Egypt’s sole SDG Pioneer. This prestigious award recognized Mrs. Menna’s exceptional contributions to sustainability in the business sector, showcasing the vital role of businesses in advancing the SDGs and driving positive change. Her recognition underlines the growing impact of individuals and organizations working tirelessly to integrate sustainable practices into their core operations.

UNGC Network Egypt’s participation in UNGA Week 2024 reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainability, diversity, and inclusion, and highlighted the essential role of global collaboration in tackling the world’s most significant challenges. Through the exchange of ideas, best practices, and innovative solutions, the Network continues to strengthen its role in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.

In November 2024, the UN Global Compact Network Egypt hosted an impactful one-day Business and Human Rights Workshop, led by Ms. Benedetta Wasonga, Africa Regional Human Rights and Gender Consultant. The workshop was designed to communicate the critical importance of embedding human rights into the core of business operations, particularly within the context of the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles.

The workshop delved into essential topics, including Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) and the Business and Human Rights Impact Assessment Tool, which equip organizations with the necessary frameworks to assess, address, and mitigate human rights risks. With an emphasis on practical, real-world applications, participants explored how businesses can proactively identify human rights issues within their operations and supply chains and take meaningful actions to prevent harm.

Tailored for senior executives and decision-makers in Supply Chain, Sustainability, Compliance, and Human Resources, the workshop provided actionable strategies for fostering a culture of respect, fairness, and accountability within organizations. Discussions focused on how to integrate human rights considerations into business policies, risk management practices, and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Beyond the theoretical aspects, the workshop featured hands-on exercises and case studies, helping participants develop the skills to effectively navigate complex human rights challenges and ensure compliance with both local and international regulations. Insights on how to align business practices with global standards for human rights, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, were shared in depth.

By the end of the session, participants were empowered with a deeper understanding of their role in upholding human rights and the tools necessary to implement lasting, positive change within their organizations. The event reinforced the UN Global Compact’s commitment to promoting responsible business practices and supporting companies in their journey toward ethical, sustainable growth.

In December 2024, the UN Global Compact Network Egypt, in collaboration with EPD Egypt, successfully hosted the 3rd round of the Sustain 360 Organizational Carbon Footprint, Certified Training Programme. Exclusively for UNGC Egypt participants, the three-day programme provided valuable expertise to help organizations measure and manage their carbon footprints, addressing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

The training, led by Dr. Nasser Ayoub, Managing Director of EPD Egypt, was designed to equip businesses with the practical tools needed to reduce their carbon emissions and integrate sustainable practices into their core operations. The programme included comprehensive sessions on identifying emissions sources, calculating carbon footprints, and understanding the global reporting standards such as the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and ISO 14064.

Participants learned about actionable strategies for emissions reduction, from energy efficiency improvements to sustainable sourcing and supply chain management. Dr. Ayoub also provided guidance on how to create detailed, tailored carbon footprint reduction roadmaps, helping businesses set clear goals and benchmarks to track their progress over time.

Additionally, the training emphasized the growing importance of sustainability within the business world and how organizations can contribute to the global climate action goals outlined in the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through this initiative, companies gained a deeper understanding of the environmental, financial, and reputational benefits of integrating carbon management practices, further empowering them to adopt more sustainable business models.

This training also strengthened the UN Global Compact’s mission to support its participant companies in reducing their environmental impacts while fostering a culture of sustainability across their respective industries.

In May 2025, the UN Global Compact Network Egypt participated in the One Global Compact Forum, a landmark gathering held in Cape Town, South Africa, to mark the 25th anniversary of the UN Global Compact. The event convened more than 120 leaders from over 58 United Nations Global Compact Country Networks, along with representatives from UNGC headquarters and regional hubs, for a week of strategic dialogue, collaboration, and shared vision.

Hosted by the UN Global Compact Network South Africa and led by Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, the Forum provided a unique platform to reflect on the achievements of the past quarter century while co-creating the global strategy that will guide the initiative from 2026 through 2030.

Mrs. Walaa El-Husseiny, Country Director, and Mr. Hany Yehia, Head of Participants Engagement, represented the UN Global Compact Network Egypt, contributing insights on strengthening regional strategies, scaling local impact, and evolving programs to meet the needs of the private sector. Together with peers from around the world, the Network’s delegation engaged in cross-regional dialogues focused on advancing accountability, driving measurable progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and elevating Africa’s role in global sustainability leadership.

Throughout the week, key themes included leveraging innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance Network operations and sustainability reporting, and fostering deeper collaboration among Country Networks to accelerate responsible business practices worldwide.

The Forum also offered an inspiring opportunity to experience the richness of South African culture and build bonds of solidarity and shared purpose with colleagues across continents.

By participating in this milestone event, the UN Global Compact Network Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the global movement of responsible business and to leading boldly toward 2030. The insights and partnerships gained in Cape Town will continue to shape the Network’s efforts to drive transformative impact across Egypt’s business community in the years ahead.
